Under the name "Pitanga Platform for Virtual FPGA Remote Laboratories," the live demonstration showcased a circuit described in Verilog running on both a real FPGA and a virtual FPGA on a laptop. The demo caught the attention of professionals and students who realized that it is possible to prototype the same Verilog code on both a real FPGA and a virtual FPGA on a PC.
The Pitanga Platform is an educational platform designed for digital circuit prototyping. Its development began during the COVID-19 pandemic at CEI - Centro de Empreendimentos em Informatica at UFRGS. The version we demonstrated uses a web-based development environment, eliminating the need to download gigabytes of software for prototyping small digital circuits. The platform incorporates elements from doctoral research at the Instituto de Informática da UFRGS and the inPlace Design Automation company.
